Liontown Resources Turns Cash Flow Positive as Lithium Prices Surge
Fund managers say a sharp spodumene price recovery has transformed Kathleen Valley's economics within a single quarter

In short
Liontown Resources generated its first-ever positive operating cash flow of $55 million in the March 2026 quarter, Cadence Capital says.
Spodumene prices rose to US$2,660 a tonne by April 2026, the highest since September 2023, on supply disruptions in Africa and China.
Liontown's Kathleen Valley mine reached a 1.5 million tonne per annum run rate, targeting an interim 2.8 million tonne rate, SG Hiscock says.
Lithium producer Liontown Resources swung from burning cash to generating its strongest quarterly cash flow on record within months, as a sharp lithium price recovery transformed the economics of its Kathleen Valley mine.
A spodumene price recovery gathers pace
Ellerston Capital's November 2025 update tracked the early stages of the rally: spodumene prices rose 19 per cent in October alone, from US$977 to US$1,237 a tonne, before settling at US$1,150, driven by strong demand for energy storage systems running ahead of installations, supported by AI-driven electricity demand and renewables growth. Sell-side analysts had turned more positive on the outlook, with the expected 2026 oversupply looking increasingly like a deficit, improving the profitability outlook for major spodumene producers including Liontown, IGO, Pilbara Minerals and Mineral Resources.
Short positions get squeezed as prices keep climbing
Sage Capital's December 2025 update showed the pain on the other side of the trade: short positions in Liontown were the fund's main detractor as the stock rose 67 per cent over the quarter, a move Sage attributed partly to surprising Chinese policy announcements stimulating demand for lithium-intensive applications despite the impending return of major lithium supplier CATL. Sage subsequently reduced much of its short exposure, preferring a more balanced stance until greater clarity emerged.
The main detractors to performance during the quarter were short positions in Liontown (ASX: LTR +67%), as lithium prices continued to rally. We were surprised by recent policy announcements from China that could further stimulate demand for lithium intensive applications, such as energy storage systems, despite the impact of the impending return of large lithium supplier CATL.

A commodity floor, then a breakout quarter
Oracle Advisory Group's March 2026 update argued lithium prices had found a floor, with Liontown now positioned to generate a 50 per cent margin at then-current prices, though it sized its position carefully given the recovery remained in early stages. That caution proved conservative: Eiger Capital's April 2026 update reported Liontown rallying 43 per cent that month on a strong quarterly result, with revenue up 51 per cent quarter on quarter, driven by an 87 per cent average spike in realised spodumene prices, and the company achieving its first positive net cash flow since production began. Cadence Capital confirmed the scale of the turnaround, describing $55 million in operating cash flow as the company's strongest financial quarter since production commenced.
Liontown transitioned from losing money on its operations in the December 2025 quarter to delivering its strongest financial quarter since production commenced with $55 million in operating cash flow. A strong operational performance and a more than 100% improvement in the lithium price were the key drivers.

A supply squeeze pushes prices to multi-year highs
Ellerston Capital's April 2026 update reported spodumene prices strengthening a further 13 per cent to US$2,660 a tonne, the highest since September 2023, helped by supply issues in Africa, while Eiger Capital pointed to CATL mine suspensions, Zimbabwe's export ban and Middle East conflict all tightening the global market, pushing inventories below one month of supply. Not every manager was convinced the rally would hold: Yarra Capital Management maintained an underweight position, viewing prices above US$2,000 a tonne as excessive given what it saw as sufficient supply available from curtailed mines in Australia and Africa if prices persisted at those levels.
A confirmed production ramp toward 4.0 million tonnes a year
SG Hiscock & Company's May 2026 site visit to Kathleen Valley reported the mine had reached a 1.5 million tonne per annum run rate, with strong ground conditions supporting confidence in a further ramp toward an interim 2.8 million tonne target, while a mill upgrade toward a larger 4.0 million tonne target, still awaiting a final investment decision, could support further consensus upgrades in outer years.
