In short
Northern Star Resources fell more than 40% from a February 2026 peak near $32 to a May low around $18.50 after three consecutive production guidance downgrades at its KCGM and Jundee operations.
An activist investor took a billion-dollar stake, prompting the board to install a new CEO and chairman in a technically credentialled leadership reset.
An August FY26 result came in better than feared, with Pendal Group flagging a free cash flow inflection expected from FY28 as the KCGM Mill Expansion Project ramps up and hedging rolls off.
Northern Star Resources fell more than 40 percent from a February peak near $32 to a May low around $18.50 after three consecutive production guidance downgrades at its KCGM Super Pit and Jundee operations, prompting an activist investor to take a billion-dollar stake and force a leadership reset, even as the stock has since recovered to around $24 on hopes the worst is over.
Three downgrades in a row
Pendal Group detailed a further FY26 production downgrade in March, just two months after the previous one, with new guidance for a minimum of 1.5 million ounces against 1.6 to 1.7 million ounces in January, itself down from 1.7 to 1.85 million ounces before that, with two-thirds of the cut tied to throughput issues at the ageing KCGM mill and one-third to lower ore grade. PM Capital said the stock fell 24 percent for the quarter, driven by weaker milling performance at the KCGM Super Pit and reduced mining productivity at the Jundee operation, compounded by a 12 percent fall in the gold price. Ellerston Capital confirmed the guidance cut represented a 9 percent reduction at the midpoint, while noting the KCGM Mill Expansion Project remains on track for commissioning in the first quarter of FY27, which should lift overall production once complete. Perpetual Asset Management said the stock fell 32.8 percent in March alone, as the sell-off coincided with a sharp gold price correction of more than 20 percent at its trough following the escalation of the Iran conflict, compounding the company-specific operational problems.
New guidance is for a minimum of 1.5 million ounces versus 1.6-1.7Moz in January (and prior to that 1.7-1.85Moz). Two-thirds of the downgrade relates to throughput at the old KCGM mill, one-third to grade.

Some see opportunity in the wreckage, others exit entirely
Ten Cap said the string of downgrades was disappointing, particularly following the earlier January cut, but the resulting sell-off left Northern Star trading at an attractive valuation relative to its large-cap peers. Paradice Investment Management moved to reduce its overall gold exposure, turning underweight gold equities via both Newmont and Northern Star as it judged the commodity price had become extended. First Sentier Investors exited its position entirely, though for a technical reason, following Northern Star's transition out of its benchmark universe and into the ASX 20.
An activist investor forces a leadership reset
Tamim Funds Management summed up the year bluntly: Australia's largest gold miner had an extraordinary commodity backdrop and did not fully convert it, with guidance cut in March and the year finishing within the reduced target rather than the original one. An activist investor arrived with a billion-dollar stake, and the board responded with a new chief executive, a new chairman and a technically credentialled leadership reset.

Not everyone is convinced the reset will be enough. Maple-Brown Abbott rated the stock a clear sell in July, saying it remains far from constructive on gold shares broadly, while Alphinity Investment Management also rated it a sell, arguing management has set market expectations in line with its own internal, stretched targets, a recipe for disappointment that has already produced three earnings downgrades over the past year, with operational risk still evident in disappointing grades across several assets.
August's result: better than feared, with a clearer path ahead
Pendal Group said the FY26 result came in broadly in line with what were by then low expectations, with production meeting guidance overall, KCGM within range even as Carosue and Pogo underperformed, and cost guidance stepping up 8 percent on inflation, an outcome better than feared. Pendal flags a free cash flow inflection from FY28 as KCGM ramps up and hedging rolls off, with near-term catalysts including a new chief executive starting soon.
What fund managers say they are watching next is how the new chief executive and chairman execute the leadership reset, whether the KCGM Mill Expansion Project commissions on schedule in the first quarter of FY27, the FY28 free cash flow inflection Pendal has flagged, and whether operational delivery can finally match the strong gold price backdrop that has been available throughout.
