Omega Oil & Gas Bets Big on Queensland's Taroom Trough Basin
Fund managers say the company's leading acreage position gives it outsized exposure to a basin some compare to a once-in-a-half-century find

In short
Omega Oil & Gas holds the largest acreage position in Queensland's Taroom Trough, over 5,000 square kilometres, SG Hiscock says.
Fund managers compare the basin's potential to Australia's first major new oil province since the 1970s, with production planning underway.
Perennial Partners says oil price moves are largely immaterial to the value of Omega's Taroom Trough development.
A largest-position bet on Queensland's Taroom Trough has turned Omega Oil & Gas into one of the more closely watched small-cap energy stories on the ASX in 2026.
A basin managers compare to Australia's next major oil province
SG Hiscock & Company added Omega to its portfolio in April 2026, framing the Taroom Trough as one of the more strategically significant hydrocarbon basins in Australia, with the potential to become the country's first major new oil province since the 1970s. The manager pointed to the basin's proximity to existing pipelines and underutilised LNG export infrastructure linked to projects such as APLNG, QCLNG and GLNG as a key advantage over remote greenfield discoveries elsewhere in the world, allowing any commercial success to be monetised faster.
Omega has built what SG Hiscock described as the basin's strongest strategic position, through wholly owned acreage, operator-led joint ventures with Beach Energy and Tri-Star, and a 19 per cent strategic stake in Elixir Energy, giving it exposure to more than 5,000 square kilometres across the Taroom Trough.
Market speculation about growing industry interest from larger players, including Shell and ConocoPhillips, underscores the basin's growing strategic relevance as geological understanding improves. Queensland Premier David Crisafulli has publicly described the Taroom Trough as a golden opportunity and potentially a once-in-a-half-century opportunity for Australia.

Oil price moves are seen as secondary to basin de-risking
Perennial Partners and Milford Asset Management both flagged the 35.7 per cent rally in Omega shares in March 2026, tied to a broader oil price rally that shone a light on the company's historical exploration results and its acreage in what Milford called one of the most prospective undeveloped regions in Australia. By May, with the oil price softening and Omega shares easing 20.3 per cent, Perennial argued the commodity price was largely immaterial to the value realisation of the Taroom Trough development, which it continued to view as shaping up to be the next hydrocarbon field developed in Australia.
SG Hiscock echoed that view of the underlying asset value in May, pointing to Omega's 19 per cent stake in Elixir Energy as an additional source of leverage to the same thematic, and describing a closer relationship between the two companies as strategically logical given their complementary acreage positions over the longer term.
Questions
What is the Taroom Trough and why does it matter to Omega Oil & Gas?
The Taroom Trough is a Queensland hydrocarbon basin that SG Hiscock & Company describes as potentially Australia's first major new oil province since the 1970s. Omega Oil & Gas holds what SG Hiscock calls the strongest strategic acreage position in the basin, spanning more than 5,000 square kilometres.
Does the oil price affect Omega Oil & Gas's investment case?
Perennial Partners has said the oil price is largely immaterial to the value realisation of Omega's Taroom Trough development, which it views as shaping up to be the next hydrocarbon field developed in Australia regardless of near-term commodity price moves.
How is Omega Oil & Gas connected to Elixir Energy?
Omega holds an approximately 19% strategic stake in Elixir Energy, and SG Hiscock & Company has said the complementary nature of the two companies' Taroom Trough acreage positions makes a closer relationship between them strategically logical over the longer term.
