Regis Resources Rides Gold's Rally Into a Scale-Driven Vault Merger
Fund managers say the unhedged gold producer's strong 2025 is now being followed by a merger built for size rather than synergies

In short
Regis Resources' fully unhedged position let it capture gold's record price rally in full through 2025, Vinva Investment Management says.
Atlas Funds Management flagged production risk and a lack of hedging as reasons to sell after gold rose 60% and shares 190% in 2025.
Regis is merging with Vault Minerals to form an approximately A$11 billion, 700,000oz-a-year producer, though Pendal sees limited synergies.
Australian gold producer Regis Resources rode a record run in the gold price through most of 2025 on the back of its fully unhedged production base, before a proposed merger with Vault Minerals split fund manager opinion on whether the resulting scale is worth the trade-off.
An unhedged position captures the full gold price rally
Vinva Investment Management's December 2025 quarterly commentary set out the core appeal: Regis Resources outperformed as gold prices reached record highs, with its unhedged position allowing full capture of the rally and strong free cash flow generation. The manager also noted an updated mine plan extending the life of the Duketon North Operations by around six years to FY31, supported by increased ore reserves at Buckingham and Wellington totalling roughly 251,000 ounces.
Oracle Advisory Group's own December 2025 take pointed to the same fundamentals from a different angle: two large producing mines in Western Australia, Duketon and Tropicana, with combined FY26 production forecast at 350,000 to 380,000 ounces, backed by a very strong balance sheet and no gold price hedging in place.
A note of caution after a stellar year
Not every manager was comfortable extending the trade. Speaking in December 2025, after a year in which gold itself rose 60 per cent against Regis shares up 190 per cent, Atlas Funds Management argued for selling, pointing to production issues and the absence of any hedging as a risk once conditions turned, and noting it would be hard for the stock to repeat a 190 per cent gain in 2026. Ten Cap took a similar view around the same time, favouring a rotation from smaller gold names like Regis into larger caps with longer-dated, less spot-price-exposed contracts still offering a tailwind after lagging the smaller names.
I'd be selling here. Had a great year. Everything went right that could possibly go right. The metal itself is up 60% versus up 190%. Invariably the production issues. If I was going to be buying gold miners, I'd buy ones that have trailed the metal price rather than them.

A merger built for scale, not synergies
By May 2026, the story had shifted from gold price exposure to consolidation. Pendal Group reported that Regis Resources and Vault Minerals had announced a merger under which Regis would acquire Vault, creating an approximately $11 billion producer of around 700,000 ounces of gold annually, a scale that would sit behind Northern Star's 1.5 million ounces but ahead of Evolution's roughly 730,000 ounces excluding copper. Regis shareholders would emerge owning 51 per cent of the combined group.
Pendal's assessment of the deal was measured rather than enthusiastic: the merger, backed by both boards, appeared mostly driven by a desire for scale, with synergies limited to tax and no material operational or corporate cost benefits expected, leading Pendal to conclude the merged entity was not being seen as an improved investment in its own right.
