Symal Group's Pipeline Keeps Growing, But the Market Isn't Convinced
Fund managers say strong results and a huge tender pipeline haven't stopped the market from periodically selling off the stock

In short
Symal Group delivered first-half FY26 revenue growth of 20.7% to $504.2 million, with 108% cash conversion, Tamim Funds Management says.
The company holds $1.4 billion in active Early Contractor Involvement tenders with a roughly 90% observed win rate, Salter Brothers reports.
Ellerston Capital calls Symal its most undervalued portfolio holding, well placed for the energy transition and data centre construction boom.
Founder-led civil contractor Symal Group has built a rapid earnings upgrade cycle through acquisitions and infrastructure contract wins, even as fund managers note the stock has periodically traded down despite consistently strong results.
A vertically integrated contractor with founder alignment
Contact Asset Management's October 2025 update described Symal as a vertically integrated, self-performing contractor spanning civil contracting, plant hire and material recycling, founded by Joe Bartolo more than 20 years ago, with around 70 per cent of the company still owned by employees. Salter Brothers' September 2025 update reported Symal had modestly outperformed its prospectus guidance by 3.7 per cent in FY25, delivering EBITDA of $106.1 million, a particularly strong result against a broadly soft civil construction industry backdrop.
Acquisitions expand the Queensland footprint
Tamim Funds Management's September 2025 update reported the acquisition of McFadyen Group, a Queensland water utilities contractor, for $11 million, forecast to add $3 million of annualised EBITDA and be earnings accretive from the first year. By December 2025, Tamim reported further expansion: the acquisition of Timms Group and L&D Contracting assets for around $28 million, adding roughly $8 million of annualised EBITDA and positioning Symal for increased civil construction work ahead of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, alongside a new $300 million revolving debt facility.
The Queensland deals position the company well for increased civil construction ahead of the 2032 Olympics. SYL was the best performing stock in the Fund in December.

Contract wins drive a rapid share price re-rate
Ellerston Capital's October 2025 update reported shares up 32 per cent for the month after Symal was awarded the $62.6 million Ballan Road Upgrade project following an Early Contractor Involvement process, with several similar opportunities still underway. Contact Asset Management's November update showed the momentum continuing, with shares up 16 per cent and hitting new all-time highs, underpinned by a strong balance sheet, a healthy project pipeline and highly aligned management.
When good results still get sold
Tamim Funds Management's February 2026 update reported a strong first-half FY26 result: normalised revenue surging 20.7 per cent to $504.2 million on market share gains and successful acquisition integration, with normalised EBITDA up 6 per cent to $51.4 million within the company's 10 to 12 per cent margin target, and 108 per cent cash conversion. Yet Tamim's own April 2026 commentary, titled around the theme of good results getting sold, acknowledged one of small and mid-cap investing's enduring truths: a company can deliver strong revenue growth, solid cash conversion and reaffirmed guidance, and still see its share price marked down regardless.
One of the enduring truths in small and mid cap investing is that the market does not always reward a good result. Sometimes it does the opposite. A company can deliver strong revenue growth, solid cash conversion, reaffirm guidance, expand into attractive end markets, and still see its share price marked down.

A large pipeline underpins continued conviction
Salter Brothers' May 2026 update reported management marginally upgrading the midpoint of FY26 EBITDA guidance to $123 million at an investor day, alongside disclosure of $1.4 billion in active Early Contractor Involvement tenders with an approximately 90 per cent observed win rate. Ellerston Capital's April 2026 update described Symal as the most undervalued position in its portfolio, well placed in the energy transition and data centre construction boom, while Hayborough Investment Partners' June update named it among its top five holdings with further room to run given the scale of its work pipeline.
